How long should you run a pool pump in Florida?
Pool pump run times for Florida: how many hours a day in summer and winter, single speed versus variable speed, and what happens when you cut run time to save money.
Most Florida pools need 8 to 12 hours of pump run time a day in summer and 6 to 8 in winter with a single speed pump, or longer at low speed with a variable speed pump. The real target is turning over the full pool volume at least once every 24 hours.
The rule is turnover, not hours
Hours are a shortcut. What actually matters is whether your pump moves the entire volume of the pool through the filter at least once a day. A 15,000 gallon pool with a pump moving 50 gallons per minute needs about five hours to turn over once. That same pool with a clogged filter and a pump moving 25 gallons per minute needs ten.
That is why the honest answer to "how many hours" is always a range. Your filter condition changes it week to week.

Why variable speed pumps run longer, not shorter
This surprises people. A variable speed pump saves money by running slowly for a long time rather than fast for a short time. Power draw does not scale linearly with speed, so halving the speed cuts energy use dramatically while only reducing flow proportionally. Running 16 hours at low speed can cost meaningfully less than 8 hours at full speed and gives you better filtration and better chemical distribution.
The mistake we find on Lake Mary and Heathrow pools constantly is a variable speed pump set to a speed so low it never actually completes a turnover. It is quiet, the bill is small, and the pool is slowly losing the fight.
Should you run the pump at night or during the day?
Day, mostly. Two reasons. Chlorine is under the most attack from UV during daylight, so circulation and any feeder or salt cell output are most useful then. And algae photosynthesizes in daylight, so that is when you want water moving. If you are on a time of use electric rate, split it: a block in the morning and a block in the late afternoon.
What happens if you cut run time to save money
- Chemicals stop distributing evenly, so you get pockets of untreated water in corners, steps and behind the ladder.
- A salt cell only produces chlorine when the pump runs. Cutting run time cuts your chlorine production by exactly the same proportion.
- Debris settles instead of reaching the skimmer, so it decomposes in the pool and consumes more chlorine.
- You save maybe fifteen dollars a month and pay for a $300 green pool cleanup in August.
Quick check on your own pool
Find your pool volume
Length times width times average depth times 7.5 for a rectangular pool. Close is good enough.
Find your pump flow rate
On the pump plate or the manual. If you have no idea, a typical residential pump moves 40 to 70 gallons per minute at full speed.
Divide
Volume divided by (flow times 60) gives you hours for one turnover. Run at least that. In summer, run more.
If your filter pressure is running high, none of this math holds, because your real flow rate is lower than the label says. That is worth a filter cleaning before you touch the timer.
