Green pool cleanup takes three to five days for most Central Florida pools. The process is testing, balancing, shocking, then running the filter continuously and vacuuming dead algae out in stages. Cost typically runs $250 to $600 depending on how far gone the water is and whether the filter can keep up.
How long does it take to clear a green pool?
Depends how green. Here is the honest timeline based on what we actually see in this area.

Cost covers chemicals, repeat visits and filter cleanings during recovery. Equipment repairs, if the pump or filter is the reason it went green, are quoted separately.
Why did my pool turn green?
Nearly always one of five things, and it is worth knowing which one so it does not happen again in six weeks.
- Chlorine ran out. A week of vacation in July is enough.
- Stabilizer is wrong. Too low and the sun destroys your chlorine by lunchtime. Too high, usually from years of trichlor tabs, and the chlorine is there on the test strip but chemically handcuffed.
- The pump was not running long enough. Florida pools need real turnover in summer. Short timer schedules to save on power are the most common cause we find.
- The filter is loaded. Pressure climbed, flow dropped, and the water stopped moving through it.
- Phosphates. Lawn fertilizer runoff after a storm feeds algae directly.
We test for all five before we throw a drum of chlorine at it. Shocking a pool without fixing the cause just buys you two weeks.
What the cleanup actually involves
Test and diagnose

Balance first, then shock
Shocking a pool with the pH at 8.2 wastes most of the chlorine. pH and alkalinity come into range before anything else goes in.
Run the filter hard
Usually 24 hours a day during recovery, with the filter cleaned as pressure climbs. Dead algae has to physically leave the pool.
Vacuum in stages
Return visits to vacuum the settled algae out. This is the part homeowners doing it themselves usually skip, and it is why the pool goes green again.
Hand it back balanced
Final readings, and an honest conversation about whether the equipment can hold it. If your pump is undersized or the filter is shot, you will hear it.
Should I just drain it?
Usually no, and in Florida this advice can cost you a pool. Parts of Seminole County have a high water table, especially after a wet season. Drain a pool with groundwater pressure under it and the shell can float or crack. Draining is the right call for extreme cases, very high cyanuric acid or a stain problem, and when we do it we check the water table first and refill promptly.
Common questions
Can I swim in a green pool?
Not safely. Green water hides the bottom, which is a real drowning risk, and algae blooms come with bacteria that cause ear, eye and skin infections. Wait until the water is clear and chlorine is back in the 2 to 4 ppm range.
How much does it cost to clean a green pool in Florida?
Most green pool cleanups in Seminole County run $250 to $600. Light blooms are closer to $150. Severe cases with heavy debris or a failing filter can reach $900 or require a drain and acid wash, which we quote on site.
Will my pool turn green again after cleanup?
Not if the cause gets fixed. The cleanup gets you clear water. Weekly service and a correct pump run time keep it that way. Most repeat greening we see is a pool that got cleared and then left alone again.
Do you charge extra if the cleanup takes longer than expected?
No. We quote the job, not the days. If the pool fights us longer than we thought, that is our problem, not a change order. The exception is a broken pump or filter, which is a separate repair we would tell you about up front.
